MAR'S architectural design was made by Rio de Janeiro's Bernardes + Jacobsen firm. The museum complex encompasses an area of 15,000 square meters and includes eight exhibition halls and about 2,400 square meters, divided over four floors, the Escola do Olhar and technical support and reception areas, as well as services to the public.

The two buildings that make up the institution are joined by a square, a walkway, and a fluid roof in the shape of a wave - the most striking trait of the Architects' calligraphy - that turns them into a harmonious whole.
